HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM- Exploring Palermo, Ali's birthday, and Recoleta Cemetery

To start off this post I must shout out to my mom for her birthday!! Hope it was amazing and I have been thinking about you all day!

Wednesday:
We started the day off with our spanish oral exams and chose our classes for the semester. We then decided to explore a new part of the city called Palermo Soho for lunch and to spend the afternoon.
It was a beautiful day and perfect for a nice mid day wine break

Jenna had dinner with our program so I was home for dinner. It was the first time we have separated and I am not going to lie I had a little bit of separation anxiety. I took a long nap because we had only had 5 hours of sleep the night before and was awaked to the cook Lilliana bringing me dinner in bed! She made one of the most typical dishes in Argentina, Empenadas which are basically ground meat and hardboiled eggs wrapped in fried dough. Not exactly my favorite thing to eat...and they are much better with chicken inside.I was really not in the mood to eat all four of these so I may or may not have picked at a few and hid the remainders in my popcorn bag..

What I did eat

What I threw away and hid....

It was Ali's birthday so we went to a bar to meet up with her called Ferano. I had to call a cab for myself for the first time! It was a very low key very private bar that was a little sketchy. It was fun to be with everyone but the actual environment was a little weird.

Jenna and Alex at Ferano- looks like an empty house

We then went to Kikas club the same one we had been to the previous night but this time at 2am it was not nearly as crowded. There were an overwhelming amount of guys and very few girls and it felt a lot more creepy than bfore. We danced for a bit and left at around 3am...early night!

Thursday:
During the day we went on a tour of the Recoleta cemetery and the surrounding areas. Recoleta is where we live and is known for its "old money". It is a very elegant part of Buenos Aires and is known for its incredible architecture and buildings. It was built trying to copy the styles of Paris to show that people here were modern and wealthy. Also, poor immigrants were living in the same areas as the rich people so in order for the rich to distinguish themselves as the welathy class they would build ridiculous mansions and statues to prove they had money.

The French Embassy- built with French style architecture

It was freezing and a little miserable...

Recoleta Church

Recoleta Cemetery

All of the Museleos each with about 20-30 caskets in each- You have to be a family of old money to be buried in this cemetery and there are a lot of open spots within each Museleo but no new families can join the cemetery

So beautiful

Shout out to Pardee for taking this pic- The president and his museleo

What the inside of some of them look like...

It was really an incredible cemetery to see! We ended the afternoon with a starbucks coffee run, typical americans, and after wandering freezing in the streets trying to find our way home we asked someone who could thankfully speak english how to get on the bus and we rode the bus for the first time! We did struggle a bit, did not know how to tell the bus driver where our stop was, was frazzled putting in our money, probably overpaid, and could not get the bus to stop where we wanted it to, but at the end of the day we were at our house- so I guess it was a success?

We tried a new gym called WellClub which was so much better than the first gym! We did a local power class that combines fast movements with weights and abs and it was the best class I have taken since I have been here! I am definitely sore from it!
